TitleDraft letter from Michael Foster to the Treasury
Date[May 1884]
DescriptionRefers to a communication from the Royal Society of the University of Edinburgh regretting that the Treasury was unable to sanction a bathymetrical survey of certain of the Scottish lochs as proposed by the Royal Society of Edinburgh. Informs that the Royal Society shares their regret and exposes how the absense of adequate data concerning not only the Scottish lochs but of all inland waters continue to form a very serious obstacle to geological research. Confirms that the Council does not desire an expensive survey and exposes details of the work to be done. Mentions a similar work in Irish lochs between 1834 and 1839, and in 1846. Appreciates the difficulties as such bathymetrical surveys do not fall within the province of the survey Department of the Office of Works and since it does not concern navigation they are foreign also to the duties of the Admiralty. Reiterates the importance of the survey and hopes the Lords will reconsider their decision and find a way to make some arrangements by which the survey may be carried out.
