Description | Letter written from the Physiology Institute, University of Wales, Newport Road, Cardiff. 'I wonder how things are going with you and your family? I have given my first lecture and feel I must now let you know how things are down here. As far as U.C.L. is concerned, they reckon only to keep a skeleton teaching staff going and to discontinue all research. Even taking the whole pharmacology course I am therefore considered to be only part-time and I dont quite know how long I shall be allowed to stay here unless I can find some other part-time job down here. It is anyway quite clear that the Provost would not countenance my having any assistance. As far as Graham Brown is concerned, he has strong principles against too much teaching, and by doing 20 lectures 1 demonstration a year I am already doing more than anyone else in the place - so he wont let me do any physiology teaching. He has taken Newton (physics) and Cuthbertson (biochem) on to his staff to help with the physiol. teaching - the classes for our students and Cardiff students being amalgamated. That is all the staff that is sanctioned by U.C.L. Actually Graham Brown is asking Bayliss and Fran Eggleton to come as guests to work in the department (thank God) - but that is because he has known Bayliss and his family well for years and nothing to do with U.C.L. I differ from Newton in being a guest here - not on the staff. As far as I can see there is at present no sort of pretext I can think of for getting you to come here. I am so sorry - I wish I could. Jug has returned and is working in Robinson's Lab. at Oxford. Pappenheim wants to come, but I have of course told him he cannot - the same is true of Podwradszky. There are no dogs to be had here, and I am finding it difficult to get into the frame of mind to invent a new problem fro research in some unfamiliar field. Kindest Regards Yours sincerely Frank R Winston' |
