TitleLetter from William Gregor, Creed, to [Charles Hatchett]
Date23 November 1804
DescriptionThanking Hatchett for two papers, which he has read. Notes that Hatchett does not consider Devonshire to be volcanic and refers him to the late county historian. Comments on Hatchett's research into stained glass of the ancients. He has read a paper on the two new metals. Believes that the mineral which [Humphry] Davy has been examining is the same as the analysis he [Gregor] has just completed. Thanks Hatchett for offering to put papers into the Philosophical Transactions, an offer he has also had from Mr Hawkins. He will insist on an appendix being published on aluminite. The small quantities available have made him doubt whether there is anything new in the mineral. If Davy publishes, it will be needless to do the same. Discusses priority and appends a summary of his account [present: 'Description of the external character of aluminite']. Offers to send specimens, including 'box-iron ore'.
