TitleNotebooks of Robert Wilson on the International Ultraviolet Explorer
DateMay 1971-September 1978
DescriptionTwo notebooks of Robert Wilson on the development of the IUE astronomical observatory satellite, a collaborative project between NASA, the UK Science Research Council and the European Space Agency (ESA). The instrument was designed as an orbiting telescope to provide real-time data on ultraviolet spectra. The mission was proposed in 1964 and launched in January 1978 aboard a NASA Delta rocket. Originally a three-year project, the satellite had a lifetime of almost eighteen years and shut down in 1996, although still functioning

Each notebook is labelled with an 'International Ultraviolet Explorer' (IUE) sticker. The notebooks contain Wilson's diary entries and meeting notes over the period 1971-1978. The IUE satellite launched January 26, 1978 from Cape Canaveral, and that occasion is documented in the diary.
