DescriptionChiefly comprises letters to Lawrence 'Lary' Schaffer from Nikolaas 'Niko' Tinbergen dated 1967-1988. The majority are addressed from the Department of Zoology, Animal Behaviour Research Group, Oxford but the correspondence continues after Tinbergen's retirement. Some letters are addressed to Lary and his wife Beth Shaffer. The letters cover both personal and professional matters, including: progress of Shaffer's D. Phil research, Tinbergen's research into animal behavoiur and into autism, documentary filming and photography, publications, and their personal mental and physical health. Some letters feature annotations, lighthearted illustrations, or more serious diagrams, for example of hide setups. There are only occassional responses from Shaffer included in the collection.

Also includes correspondence with Tinbergen's wife Lies, some of which postdates Niko Tinbergen's death.

The following other correspondents appear as authors or addressees: Tinbergen's nephew Joost Tinbergen, Tinbergen's secretary Pat Searle, John 'Jack' F. Stout, Dr A J Dorey, Oxford University Registrar, Dr Morlock, Lars V. Haartman, Mr Steel, County Land Agent and Valuer, Cumberland County Council, Robert A Hinde, Dr J D Armstrong, Pankaj Prasoon, Heide Sievers .

Correspondence is interspersed with related papers and occassional visual aids.
