TitleCopy letter from Robert William Frederick Harrison, to the Under Secretary of State for India
Date23 July 1902
DescriptionThe Observatories Committee of the Society at their last meeting had before them the Under Secretary's letter enclosing correspondence on the subject of the Poona Observatory, upon which the Secretary of State for India desired the views of the Committee. The Observatories Committee also had before them the reports of the inspection of the Colaba, Madras [Chennai] and Kodiakanal Observatories enclosed in Mr Walpole's letter of 17 April, and annual reports on the same observatories for the period ending 31 December 1901.

The Observatories Committee think results of value are now being obtained at Poona and consider it desirable that the work there should continue until the retirement of the present Director. The Committee think the attention of the Secretary of State should be called to the want of repair of both the Bombay and Madras Observatory buildings and urges the necessity of carrying out the repairs and completing the buildings at Kodiakanal.

The Committee approved the report on the Bombay Observatory and thought work at that Observatory seems to be progressing quiet satisfactorily. Regarding the Kodiakanal Observatory Report, the Committee note with satisfaction that the observer has adopted the Committee's recommendations as to a scheme of work and now gives in the report a list of the instruments employed. The Committee recommend observations of sun spots at Kodiakanal be confined to photographs which should supersede drawings and measures of position.
