Title | Copy letter from Michael Foster, to the Under Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Foreign Office |
Date | 21 November 1902 |
Description | The Royal Society has just received a report from Dr Low of the Uganda Sleeping Sickness Commission which contains two important statements; the Filaria perstans has no causal connection with the disease; Dr Castellani, the bacteriologist of the Commission, has discovered a microbe which he has reason to think is the cause of the disease.
Encloses a copy of Castellani's technical report [not enclosed] which the Committee consider most interesting but they do not think the research yet complete. Provides a telegram notice which should be sent to Castellani asking if he can remain for six months to confirm and extend his results and asking him to send home cultures and preparations immediately. Asks His Majesty's Government to dispatch the telegram. Hopes the Government will be willing to extend funding for Castellani along with the Society.
Low's report is very brief but he is expected to return to England in early December. The Committee will after conference with Low, communicate with the Under Secretary again. |
