TitleCopy letter from Michael Foster, to the Under Secretary of State, the India Office
Date16 February 1889
DescriptionWith reference to their request of 25 November 1886 that the Royal Society take charge of the manuscripts of Colonel Herschel's Pendulum experiments, Foster may now inform them that an application has been received by Herschel from Professor J Howard Gore of the Columbia University, New York to borrow a portion of the bibliography, making due acknowledgment. This is because Gore is preparing a bibliography of Geodesy for publication by the United States Coast and Geodetic Survey, and it would usefully supplement his own collection of titles.

Herschel has therefore made an application to allow this to the President and Council of the Royal Society, but as the manuscript is the property of the India Office, they seek to obtain the sanction of the Secretary of State for India in Council, before acceding to Gore's request.
