Description | In response to their letter of 10 May, Foster conveys the gratitude of the "Challenger" Committee for the Treasury's favourable decision with regard the proposals in Foster's earlier letter. The committee are therefore prepared, on behalf of the Royal Society, for a subsidy of 1600 pounds, to arrange for the completion of the reports with Mr Murray, including the outstanding memoirs and the summary, and undertake the deposit of specimens and materials in the British Museum. The former arrangement for the printing to be carried out by the Stationary Office will continue, but in other matters the committee will act as the medium between Murray and the Treasury.
In response to the offer to advance a sum to meet expenses already incurred, the committee will apply if such a sum is deemed necessary, but they hope to proceed without taking up the kind offer, with no serious liabilities yet incurred, until the House of Commons has agreed to the vote. Foster also suggests that the wording be altered so that the subsidy appears granted to the Royal Society rather than the "Challenger"committee. |
