TitleCopy letter from Joseph Larmor and Archibald Geikie, to the Secretary, His Majesty's Board of Trade
Date20 January 1905
DescriptionGeikie and Larmor are instructed by the President and Council to draw attention to the correspondence enclosed herewith regarding counterfeiting of the verification marks of the National Physical Laboratory [NPL] [no enclosures]. So far as the practices alleged in these letters exists, and the authorities of the NPL show in their memorandum strong grounds for their belief that there is a substantial foundation for the complaint, the Kew Observatory mark has ceased to be any safeguard for the accuracy of clinical thermometer or indication of their origin.

As the standardizing operations of the NPL are conducted on behalf of the Government by the executive committee appointed by the Royal Society, the Society are to request that the Board of Trade will advise them on the policy they are to pursue in this matter.
