Title | Copy letter from [Joseph Larmor] to the Secretary, His Majesty's Treasury |
Date | 29 October 1906 |
Description | Is instructed by the President and Council at the instance of the Executive Committee of the National Physical Laboratory to report the progress made in expenditure of the Grants now running for building and equipment. In a Treasury letter of 26 December 1904, their Lordships state their intention to ask Parliament for a building grant of £5000 for 1905-6, and express the hope that for four or five years to come it might be possible to provide an equal amount. The Executive Committee and the Royal Society gratefully recognize the action of their Lordships in raising the grant to £10,000 for the current financial year, thereby promoting the early development and utility of the Laboratory. The Executive Committee arranged a contract last June for additional buildings for metrology, engineering and chemical metallurgy, amounting to £10,200. This amount covers only the cost of the actual building but makes no provision for heating, lighting, instruments and fittings. The Committee trusts their Lordships will enable them to complete this part of their extension by providing £5,000 during the ensuing year. It is most desirable that the plan of steady development of the laboratory based on this expectation should proceed and especially that these building should proceed to completion without delay. |
