| Description | Rix clarifies Dr Johnson's request regarding publishing. Johnson has sent his proof to 'Nature' and has asked the President for permission to send it to the 'Lancet' and the 'British Medical [Journal]'. The President has this morning sent his permission but Rix has not yet communicated this to Johnson. At the time of the Edridge Green affair Rix received a supplementary instruction that when the Secretaries said a paper was doubtful Rix was to warn the author that it must not be published as 'read before the Royal Society'. The first time Rix applied this instruction was in the case of Mr Preece, and Rix caused him 'mortal offence'. Johnson's proof has already gone to 'Nature' and Rix asks if the publication is to be stopped. The second report on Johnson's paper has arrived this morning and it recommends the abstract be printed. The first report also virtually recommended the same but that the paper not be printed in full, which implies that it may be printed in abstract. The chief awkwardness arises from the fact that Dr Johnson is under the impression that Foster gave him leave to publish the abstract wherever he liked. As a postscript Rix notes Johnson has called and Rix has sent him away in good humour. Johnson will write to 'Nature' to stop the publication until he has definite permission. |
