| Description | In response to Sedgwick's letter of 7 November, Bradford states that the letter to which Sedgwick refers, signed by Professor Hickson, Bourne, and himself, was read to Council on 8 July, and it was resolved that the documents bearing on the subject should be placed in the hands of the President, as the Royal Society's representative on the Body of Trustees of the British Museum. The President communicated with the authorities of the British Museum at Bloomsbury and South Kensington, and examined Statutes, and found nothing that would affect the freedom of action of the Director of the Natural History Museum in regard to the scientific arrangements of the institution placed in his charge.
The friction between the two heads did not arise from regulations, but from personal character. As a new Director has been appointed, and relations are amicable, it appears all future conduct will be satisfactory. The Royal Society therefore does not need to move for an enquiry on behalf of the Government. |
