TitleCopy letter from John Rose Bradford, to Arthur Everett Shipley, Fellow of the Royal Society
Date3 February 1910
DescriptionBradford submitted Cole's paper on 'Tone Perception in Gammarus Pulex' to two Fellows, one a zoologist and the other a physicist, and they both call attention to what they consider a weak point in the paper in the paper, which the author can perhaps clear up. They would like to know if there any natural response at all to the stimulus, as an observable response is only obtained under artificial conditions.

They suggest that it is more natural to suppose that the live-box in which the creature is under compression serves as the medium of communication of atmospheric vibrations, and that it would prevent a response which would occur if it were not there. If the author can meet this criticism by experimented evidence, then it should be included. If not, then the paper should be withdrawn.
