Date | 30 May 1910 |
Description | 'Greenwich Visitors. I have to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 27th instant on the subject of the vacancy in the Board of Visitors of Greenwich Observatory caused by the lamented death of Sir William Huggins. The selection of a new representative of the RAS rests with that Society, and I do not see that the fact of Sir David Gill being at this moment President need hamper the action of the Council of the Society in recommending the man whom they think best fitted for the officer. In regard to the arrangement which you inform me will be adopted by the Hydrographer, I do not think the Royal Society can express an opinion without have ascertained the views of the Council of the RAS. As Chairman of the Board of Visitors I should expect direct communication from the Admiralty in regard to any proposed rearrangement of the composition of the Board.' |
