| Description | The Secretaries ask H M Government for assistance with a view to the settlement of the future of the International Catalogue of Scientific Literature. In 1896 an International Conference was called together after the Royal Society concluded that they could not single handedly carry on the indexing of Scientific Literature. Out of this conference, and a later one, the International Catalogue was established.
At the Second International Convention in 1910 continuation regarding Scientific Literature was agreed unanimously, with the exception of the Imperial German Government, whose representative had no instructions and therefore had to abstain from assent. The Royal Society were then requested to renew the necessary contracts. However it is clear that the very substantial assistance provided by the German Government in the collection of the German Scientific Literature and in subscription for annual sets of the Catalogue is again available for the next five years, it will be impossible for the Royal Society to proceed at any rate under the present scheme.
The Royal Society are advised that as the original agreement was reached by diplomatic means, and that the business concerns the Imperial German Government, and not the Scientific Academies, the correct course would be to make an application through the Foreign Office to request an intimation of the Imperial German Government as regards the next five years, on which the future of the International Catalogue of Scientific Literature now depends. |
