TitleCopy letter from James Hopwood Jeans, Secretary of the Royal Society; to the Secretary of the Admiralty
Date12 July 1921
DescriptionWrites on the subject of the transference of the Cape Observatory to the Government of the Union of South Africa. Writes that the Council of the Society are anxious about the effect this may have on the astronomical observations in the Southern Hemisphere, with the loss of the Observatory being detrimental to the precision work that is currently carried out. Suggests some guarantees to be included in the terms of transfer to soften this loss and suggests that a Standing Committee be appointed to oversee the continued efficiency of the Observatory.
