DescriptionIn reply to Schaw's letter of 25 June, Foster is instructed by the Delta Committee of the Royal Society to express their satisfaction that the boring at Lagazig is being carefully carried on and they desire the work to be continued until, if possible, solid rock is reached. Regarding funding, the Society having already spent £350 of its private means, the further sum of £200 for which the Commanding Royal Engineer now asks, ought be provided from the Government Grant, administered by a Committee acting under the superintendence of the Royal Society. That Committee however does not meet again until November and its decisions cannot be forestalled. There can be little doubt that either the Government Grant Committee will make the grant in November or the Society will furnish the £200. With regard to future operations and considering the large sum already expended, it is desirable some definite results should be arrived at, and the bottom reached in at least one boring. On reaching solid bottom or on bringing up distinct Miocene fossils at Lagazig the Commanding Royal Engineer should immediately report home for further instruction.
