TitleCopy letter from Dr Michael Foster, to Colonel Colin Scott-Moncrieff RE
Date23 October 1886
DescriptionAt the request of the Royal Society, Her Majesty's Government has for some time been conducting borings in the delta of Egypt to add to our knowledge of the geology of that formation. The operations have been carried on by the help of funds supplied by the Royal Society. The last borings at Lagazig carried down to about 170 feet below the mean sea level at Alexandria have produced interesting results with no solid bottom of rock having been reached. During a recent interview between Captain Dickinson RE, in charge of the Lagazig borings, and the Delta Committee, it was mentioned that Scott-Moncreiff was boring near Suez in search of petroleum. The Delta Committee asks if Scott-Moncreiff will communicate any facts of geological interest observed during the latter borings.
