| Description | Foster explains that the Royal Society are in charge of an expedition to make a boring in the coral island Funafuti, with a view to solving questions of scientific importance regarding the structure and mode of the formation of coral reefs. He further states that the Admiralty's ship "Penguin" has been placed at their disposal, and the Government of New South Wales have granted the use of boring apparatus.
He states that the ship will call at Fiji and will likely take in coal there, so Foster is directed by the President and Council to ask that should the expedition, led by Professor William Johnson Sollas, require their assistance or advice that they be disposed to grant their valuable aid. |
