Title | Copy letter from Michael Foster to the Secretary to the Admiralty, Whitehall, S.W. |
Date | 20 February 1896 |
Description | Foster is directed to inform them of further details concerning the proposed expedition to Funafuti to bore the coral reef. Firstly, that Professor Sollas, who will lead the expedition, will be accompanied and assisted by Mr J Stanley Gardiner, who will at the same time carry out natural history research, and possibly also 'some man of science at Sydney'. He therefore asks that the hospitality of the 'Penguin' ship be extended to these men.
The boring equipment to be conveyed from Sydney to Funafuti has been estimated to weigh no more than 20 tons.
Foster is also directed to ask that the Officers commanding Her Majesty's ship "Penguin" be told to supply the necessary coal, probably less than 20 tons, to be paid from funds provided under the usual Admiralty rules.
The expedition is due to leave Sydney on 1 May, and the reef work is scheduled to occupy roughly ten weeks. |
