Title | Copy letter from Michael Foster, to the Secretary, Science and Art Department, South Kensington, S.W. |
Date | 24 July 1897 |
Description | At their meeting on the 1 July, the President and Council of the Royal Society had under consideration a recommendation made to them by the Committee of the Society appointed to arrange and supervise an Expedition to explore Coral Island, Funafuti, by boring, if possible, through the rocks below. That recommendation was to the effect that, as the salary which Professor W J Sollas, received as Assistant Geologist to the Geological Survey of Ireland had been withdrawn during his absence on the Expedition, he should receive some compensation from the funds of the Society. It appears Sollas had extra leave of absence for six months, that he went off duty on 12 March, returning 26 October and during this period received no salary. Undergoing a loss of £108.
Notes that the President and Council believe that officers of the British Museum, when they are granted leave of absence for the purpose of carrying out some scientific undertaking, are allowed to retain their salaries.
Had the President and Council been made aware of the circumstances, they would have ventured to urge these consideration upon My Lords at the time Sollas applied for leave. They trust it is not too late for the Lords to reconsider the matter and recognize the undesirability of discouraging the zeal of their scientific officers. |
