TitleCopy letter from Michael Foster, to Sir Thomas H Sanderson, Under Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, the Foreign Office, S.W.
Date19 June 1897
DescriptionIn reply to Sanderson's letter of 24th May and to Francis Bertie's letter of the 14th, enclosing copies of despatches from Her Majesty's Agent and Consul General at Sofia and a memorandum pamphlet from Monsignor Tondini de Quarenghi, Foster is directed to say that the President and Council are in sympathy with all efforts to extend the use of the Gregorian calendar as much as possible, but they are not aware that it is in their power to take any special action in the present case.

With regard to a fixed date for Easter, the President and Council while admitting that such a fixed date would be most desirable, are of the opinion that the matter lies wholly outside the sphere of the Society's action.
