| Description | With reference to the Secretary's letter 14264/97 of the 27th October, and Harrison's reply dated 9th November, relating to the representation of Great Britain on the International Geodetic Association, the President and Council having learned that the Astronomer Royal has declined to act as representative of Great Britian upon the Permanent Committee of the Association, have directed Harrison to suggest George Howard Darwin FRS.
Though no mention is made of the fact in the regulations of the Association, it is usual for the members of the Permanent Committee to meet annually in Berlin for several days. Professor Darwin's acceptance of the post would probably be conditional on the payment of the expenses of his attendance at these meetings and the triennial Conferences. They hope the Lords of Treasury will be willing to pay the expenses of the Permanent Delegate. |
