TitleCopy letter from Arthur William Rucker and Michael Foster, to Captain E H Hills, Secretary, Joint Permanent Eclipse Committee, Royal Astronomical Society, Burlington House, W.
Date29 April 1898
DescriptionHills' letter relating to the results of the observations of the recent Solar Eclipse has been considered by the President and Council of the Royal Society. The suggestions made are only dealing with the publication of the accounts of the expedition which has just been concluded.

It was intended that the communications made to the Society on March 31 should be an informal statement of the main results of the expedition for general interest of the Fellows and men of science. However, due to the difficulty of distinguishing between such informal communications and actual reports, and so as to not encroach on the duties of the Joint Permanent Eclipse Committee, none of the communications at the meeting shall be published. Instead it will be recorded in the 'Proceedings' that such a meeting was held and the names given of those who attended.

Suggests that results of the expedition should be brought to the notice of all men of science, whether astronomers or not. Therefore propose that the preliminary reports are published in the 'Proceedings [of the Royal Society]' and also in the 'Monthly Notices' of the Astronomical Society, the publications being identical.

The full reports should be published in the "Philosophical Transactions" as a separate part and distributed, taking in to account the wishes of the Astronomical Society. Wishes to proceed as quickly as possible with this plan of action and trusts that the Astronomical Society will find no major difficulty in publishing the reports as suggested in the "Monthly notices".
