TitleCopy letter from Robert William Frederick Harrison, to the Chairman of the Kew Observatory Committee
Date10 October 1898
DescriptionIs directed by the President and Council to forward two copies of the report of the Committee on the establishment of a National Physical Laboratory, and a copy of a letter addressed to the President by the Treasury [no enclosures]. There is reason to believe that the Government desires an answer from the Society by the end of November at the latest so the matter will have to be considered by the Council at an early meeting. The acceptance of the proposals for the Government must affect the Kew Observatory as presently managed, therefore the Council with to place the correspondence in the hands of the Kew Committee and to ask for any remarks or suggestions they may have to make thereon. In particular, the President and Council will be obliged if the Kew Committee will inform them as to the conditions of the Gassiot Trust, and indicate any difficulties which might arise with regard to it if the proposals of Government were accepted.

The suggestion as to a change in the relations between the Kew Committee and the Meteorological Council will require the careful attention of the Council of the Royal Society. Asks for remarks no later than the 26th.
