TitleCopy letter from Michael Foster, to Sir Clements Markham, Fellow of the Royal Society, President of the Royal Geographical Society
Date13 July 1899
DescriptionIs sorry Markham does not approve of the Joint Committee being called and does not think Markham has quite understood the reasons which led the Society to wish that it should be summoned. Now that the Committee knowns more or less what the Government will do they must have a fairly clear programme of their plans of investigation. In view of this the Chairmen of the respective Sub-Committees have already issued summonses for those Committees.

Thinks it absolutely necessary that the suggestions of the Sub-Committees should be harmonized and integrated. Does not know that they have accurately defined the powers of the Committee and thinks they had better perhaps do that, on very distinct lines, when the two Societies meet again in November. Meanwhile thinks there can be no objection to the Joint Committee meeting to consider and if possible draw up a plan of investigation.

Explains why he does not think the plan of referring frequently to the Councils of the two Societies will work. Suggests the Committee prepare a scheme which may then be submitted as a whole to the two Councils. Hopes Markham will withdraw his objection to the Committee meeting and wire to that effect.
