Title | Copy letter from Michael Foster, to the Secretary of Her Majesty's Treasury |
Date | 20-23 December 1887 |
Description | Forwards at the instruction of the Challenger Committee of the Royal Society an enclosed report and estimates for the financial year 1888-1889 by John Murray. Murray has discovered that he will not be able to complete the publication of the Challenger reports by the first half of the financial year 1888-1889 as he had hoped, with the result of an increased expenditure of 1080 pounds in excess of the original estimate. Foster outlines the view of the committee of the delay as regrettable but unavoidable, and their request for a more detailed report from Murray of the causes of the excess, which will be forwarded to the Treasury. Also refers to a wish expressed by Murray to keep more type standing, which Foster leaves to the judgement of the Treasury.
Includes the 'Report on the State of the Work connected with the Challenger Reports' by John Murray. The slower than expected progress is recorded as partly being due to the poor health of some contributors, and the difficulty of ensuring contributors complete their manuscripts and return proofs for press in a timely manner, as well as the challenge of limiting the size of reports. Murray further notes the current limitations of the printers, who can only put in type 100 sheets. |
