| Description | The Secretaries are directed by the President and Council to inform Abney that Sir Norman Lockyer has applied for a grant of £100, for a lens required for the observations he proposes to make during the forthcoming total eclipse of the sun. The correspondence which has passed on the subject between Lockyer, the Secretary of the Joint Permanent Eclipse Committee [JPEC] and the Royal Society is enclosed [not attached]. Council will be much obliged if Board B will consider the application in view of the enclosed correspondence and state if they recommend that the grant of £100 be made as requested.
Council have requested the JPEC to furnish Abney with a final detailed estimate of the expenses to be defrayed out of the Grants already voted, together with a statement of the general character of the observations which each observer proposes to make. This request is in accord with an arrangement which was come to by the Royal Society and Royal Astronomical Society, after the sum of £500 was voted by the Government Grant Committee for the observation of the forthcoming eclipse, but probably no objection will be raised to the application of a rule to which both Societies have agreed.
Discusses a reserved some of £200 voted in 1899.
Council will not be unwilling to grant Lockyer's application if Board B approve it and if the whole of the sum already voted is to be expended for scientific purposes which Board B approves.
