TitleCopy letter from Michael Foster, to the Secretary to the Admiralty, Whitehall, S.W.
Date7 February 1901
DescriptionWith reference to his previous letter of 9 January and to the Secretary's letter of the 21 January, M/579, referring to assistance to the observers of the total solar eclipse on 18 May, the Joint Eclipse Committee of the Royal Society and the Royal Astronomical Society do not find it possible to send observers to occupy a port on the East Coast of Sumatra, so there will be only one party going to that country, who will take up a station in the neighborhood of Padang.

The party will consist of F W Dyson and H F Newall. This change will modify the needs of the expedition as represented in Foster's former communication and it would be sufficient if one of His Majesty's vessels could be detailed to meet them at Padang on 10 April, and remain on the West Coast of Sumatra whilst the party is there and render assistance with the observations.
