TitleCopy letter from [Michael Foster], to Sir E Maunde Thompson
Date23 December 1901
DescriptionIs desired by the President [William Huggins] to express to Thompson without waiting for a meeting of Council, the great gratification of the Officers which will certainly be shared by the rest of Council, at the news contained in Thompson's letter that a British Academy for the promotion of Historical, Philosophical and Philological Studies has been formed.

Election into the International Association of Academies of a new 'Learned Body' is determined by the Statutes of the Association, marked in the copy enclosed [not attached].

Shall at once forward a copy of Thompson's letter of 20 December to the present Directing Academy, L'Academie des Sciences, at Paris, but as they cease this role on 31 December it is unlikely they will take any steps regarding the entrance of the British Academy into the Association. This duty will probably be left to the successors- the Royal Society, and it will be undertaken with peculiar pleasure.
