TitleCopy letter from Michael Foster, to the Under Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Foreign Office
Date2 December 1902
DescriptionIn reply to the Under Secretary's letter of 27 November, the Royal Society does not possess any paper relating to the Sleeping Sickness Commission which could with advantage be transmitted to the Congo Government. As explained in a recent letter, the Royal Society has only received brief and preliminary reports from the Commission. These state that the Commission have come to the conclusion that Filaria perstans has no causal connection with sleeping sickness and that one of the Commission, Dr Castellani, has discovered a microbe which he believes to be the cause of the disease. Castellani has sent home a preliminary note on the subject but in its present form this it too imperfect to be published. Dr Low, the leader of the Commission, is expected to arrive in England toward the end of the moth and will doubtless bring full reports. Soon after his arrival Foster hopes to be in a position to furnish Lord Lansdowne with something sufficiently definite to be transmitted to the Congo Government.
