| Description | Scott's report to the Royal Society and Royal Geographical Societies reached safely and they wish to express their full appreciation of the admirable way Scott has so far as possible carried out the duties entrusted to him. The courage and perseverance shown by Scott and all on board, under the most tying circumstances, deserve and have their warmest praise.
The geographical results obtained are already declared by geographers to be of high value, and they trust that when all the data and material collected is brought home and examined, the remaining scientific results will also be found of great interest.
On learning that Scott was detained in the ice the two Societies made an appeal to His Majesty's Government for aid in sending out the 'Morning' for relief. The appeal, as will be seen from the enclosed copies of letters [not enclosed], led to a proposal on the part of H M Government to undertake through Admiralty the entire arrangements for the relief expedition. This offer was cordially accepted and the 'Terra Nova' and 'Morning' are being dispatched to Scott's relief. Explains how Scott should proceed if the 'Discovery' is freed, or if it is necessary that it be abandoned. |
