According to Inglis, Graham commissioned Watts to paint the portrait, although there is no direct evidence of this except a letter from Watts to Graham acknowledging the receipt of a cheque for the picture. The cheque however was for so small an amount in comparison with what Watt's prices are supposed to have been at that time, that Inglis supposes that the transaction was a special one of a friendly nature, and under such conditions it seems very likely, the copyright may have been reserved to the artist.
