| Description | Harrison encloses a letter from Mr Vernon Harcourt and explains that he had feared this situation might arise. Having discussed it with the Treasurer, he has asked Harrison to communicate that although such a statement written at the bottom of the certificate, to the effect that a separate list of papers is attached, would make the list valid if the promoter guaranteed all signatories agreed with it, they cannot contravene the Council's resolution, namely that the list should be abbreviated for printing. As the list must be sent out in the first week of February, the Treasurer has agreed that they will follow the decision of Council but write a friendly letter to Harcourt to explain that although they must comply with the Council's resolution, they could fulfill it by simply omitting a couple of publications from the list which may be deemed less significant to his candidature.
Should Larmor agree, Harrison asks that he writes the letter to Harcourt and send it to the Royal Society to allow them to keep a copy. He also asks if there is any chance of reverting to the former practice, as authorised by the Statutes, of only sending the list of names round in print to the Fellows, as it would save expense, copying and questions such as that relating to Harcourt from arising in future.
The Royal Geographical letter is enclosed for Larmor's signature, with Sir Archibald Geikie having already signed. |
