Description | Larmor responds to the request contained in their letter of 18 February for the assistance of the Royal Society in selecting two assistants to the Meteorological Reporter, and reports that they invited applications from universities and other likely sources, which were then submitted to the Observatories Committee.
With advice from Sir John Eliot and Mr Holderness, the Committee recommended J Patterson, currently in the Indian Educational Service for the first post. They suggest either J H Field, St John's College, Cambridge or Mr W Watkin, University College, Bristol for the second. Field is suggested due to the 'general impression of enterprise' produced in his interview and his practical experience in engineering works. Field was a candidate for the first post, but is not well qualified in mathematical reductions, so they have written to ask whether he is happy to be nominated for the second, and enclose his reply which raises questions which can only be answered by the Government of India. |
