TitleCopy letter from Michael Foster, to Sir R Welby, H.M. Treasury, Whitehall
Date23 December 1889
DescriptionIn response to Welby's letter of 10 May (reference 7416/89), Foster now wishes to apply for a moiety of the 1600 pounds voted by Parliament for a subsidy for completing the "Challenger" Report. He details the expenditure from March to October as around 310 pounds, excluding Mr Murray's salary. At the end of January, a further 200 pounds will have been spent, with the proportion of Murray's salary to that date to exceed 800 pounds, covering the amount now applied for.

Foster notes the satisfactory progress of the reports, and states that the last volume of the 'Zoological Series', volume 32, was issued in October, and the last volume of the 'Physical and Chemical Series' was with the binders' in November, and so should be on the point of publication. The 'Report on the Deep Sea deposits' is largely in type and almost all the illustrations have been printed, so they hope to issue it in March. Finally, Foster records that 'some progress' has been made with the final volume.
