TitleCopy letter from Herbert Rix, to Colonel John Herschel, Fellow of the Royal Society
Date14 March 1889
DescriptionThe matter referred to in Herschel's letter of 12 February, namely a request from Professor Gore of Columbia University, has been considered by the President and Council of the Royal Society at their last meeting. Although the Royal Society have the manuscripts, they are the property of the India Office, and upon application to that office they have been granted permission to loan the papers to Columbia University.

Although a slightly misunderstanding, as Gore holds office at Columbia University he should be able to access them, and any further correspondence would risk delay. The President and Council of the Society have therefore resolved to grant Gore's request providing the means for the manuscripts safe return are approved by the officers. Herschel is to let Rix know if he should send the manuscript to him for transmission, what measures will be taken to ensure its safety, and whether he will communciate with Columbia University or if Rix should.
