Description | Rix explains that Colonel Herschel suggested that the manuscript of Colonel Herschel's bibliography of 'Pendulum Operations', property of the India Office and under the custody of the Royal Society, be lent to Professor Gore of Columbia University, to supplement a 'Geodetic Bibliography' shortly to be published by the United States Coast and Geodetic Survey. The official wording of the acceptance from the India Office notes the loan will be to Columbia University, and is on the condition of due care being taken over its delivery and return. As a consequence Rix is informing him and Gore of its dispatch via the agency of Messrs Wesley & Son to the Smithsonian Institute.
Rix explains the package, contained in a wooden case addressed to Professer Gore care of the President of Columbia University, will contain a box of slip titles labelled '(Supplementary) Bibliography of pendulum operations, & discussion of the figure of Earth, 1668-1880', and a folio brown book with slips pasted in, labelled 'MS Supplement to the bibliography of the pendulum observations and allied subjects, as contained in an appendix to Vol V of the account of the survey of India'. |
