| Description | The Council of the Royal Society, with the approval of the Fellows, have asked Stokes to communicate their pleasure at learning the Lord Mayor has called a meeting at Mansion House on 1 July with the intention of raising a fund to both acknowledge the indebtedness of Great Britain to the Institut Pasteur, in which 200 cases of rabies have been cured in their countrymen using Louis Pasteur's system, and to cover the expense of the journey to Paris for poorer countrymen who may need treatment there.
The Royal Society takes a particular interest in this recognition of Pasteur's services in carrying out 'so remarkable an extension of that "natural knowledge" which the Society was founded to develop'. To formalise this approval, they have appointed the Officers of the Society, with Sir James Paget, Sir Joseph Lister, Sir Henry Roscoe and Professor Edwin Ray Lankester to be their representatives. Stokes explains that Pasteur has been a Foreign Member of the Society for many years, with his achievements including receiving the Copley Medal in 1874, and being invited to deliver the Croonian Lecture in 1889. In the latter instance, the Society decided, upon hearing of his health, to appoint [Pierre Paul Émile] Roux to deliver the lecture in his stead.
In providing the opportunity to show the public's appreciation of the benefits of Pasteur's discoveries, Stokes states that the Mayor is giving aid to the progress of science and 'the abatement of suffering and disease'. |
