| Description | Rix expresses his regret that progress on Joly's paper has stalled during his absence, but states that he will get it started immediately. He further explains that he has read through the correspondence regarding Joly's figures, and work on figures 10 and 11 has been started on wood, white on black. Rix has sent the manuscript to be set up in slip without figures, so he can place the figures when Joly has corrected the text.
The matters of figure three and the photographs are undecided. He encloses figure three for Joly's inspection, stating that the engraver believes it can be done with delicacy, white on black, as a woodcut, and so Rix recommends this as easier to reference if in the text and cheaper than a lithograph plate. If he wishes to have black on white however, a lithograph will be necessary. Once he has chosen, Rix will put the work in hand. With regard to the photographs, Rix proposes sending them to Messrs Waterlow for an estimate, as they are highly recommended and have been used before. He asks that Joly select and arrange his chosen photos in his desired order, and return them to Rix who will try to have them undertaken quickly. The photographs must be plates because they cannot be put into the text, except by the Mesienbach process, which is noted as unsatisfactory. |
