He corrects the misapprehension that they have £1000 to come from the Colonial Office, explaining that the Royal Society agreed to surrender half due to the institution of the new Chair, and of the remaining £500, it is likely that £100 will be needed to cover allowances granted to Minchin by the Ugandan authorities, and now being reclaimed.
Geikie expresses the indignation he feels when he compares the way such matters are treated by the British Government to similiar undertakings in Germany. For their part, time and thought is given to the business, and in response, every financial request they make is granted grudgingly or entirely refused.
Harrison has shared Lankester's proposed correction to minute 6 of the Minutes of the Tropical Diseases Committee, but he explains that it was written up immediately following the meeting by Fowler from his own shorthand, and it matches both David Bruce and Geikie's recollection of what was decided. It does not matter which wording is adopted. |
