Title | Copy letter from Joseph Larmor, to Professor Herbert Hall Turner, Fellow of the Royal Society |
Date | 30 May 1907 |
Description | As Turner suggested, the Council of the Royal Society have considered his letters as Chairman of the British Association Committee on Seismology in regard to the negotiations of the British Association with the Post Office and Treasury concerning the provision of a daily time signal by Greenwich Observatory to Professor Milne's Sesimic Observatory at Shide, Isle of Wight. The Council are unhappy to hear that the costs are so large in proportion to the funds available for carrying on the Observatory's work, but they do not feel able to advise on whether the expense should be incurred.
Larmor has been asked to highlight the existence of the Royal Society Seismic Committee, intended to advise and assist Milne in relation to the expenditure of grants by the Government Grant Fund administered by the Royal Society. They would be equipped to advise on whether any other method of keeping time would be preferable. |
