Description | Larmor writes to communicate the views of the Observatories Committee of the Royal Society, having considered the annual reports of the Kodaikanal and Madras Observatories and the Bombay Observatory, with the memorandum of the Director General of Observatories. They are satisfied with the progress of work and outlook at Kodaikanal, and were also pleased to hear from the Director General that Mr Evershed was able to gain experience and knowledge about comparison of climates by visiting some of the large American observatories on the way to Kodaikanal.
They suggest that the Greenwich numbers relating to sunspots are also given in the Bulletin for convenience of reference. The Committee also approve the report of the Bombay and Colaba Observatories and the Observatory at Poona. They were interested in the reports of the Indian Board of Scientific Advice for 1905-1906 regarding the development of the Indian Meteorological service, and the promising observations of the upper atmosphere by means of kites and balloons. The Committee further express interest in the Trigonometical Survey as it concerns atmospheric refraction as deduced from observations of mountain peaks, and welcome the rapid progress of the magnetic survey.
Larmor also notes the suggestion that the reports of the Board of Scientific Advice should be published and circulated. |
