TitleCopy letter from Archibald Geikie, to Sir Oliver Joseph Lodge, Fellow of the Royal Society
Date25 June 1908
DescriptionAt the adjudication of the Mackinnon Studentship in Physics, Council had some difficulty in deciding between two candidates, one of which was [Francis William] Aston of Birmingham University. It was eventually given to another man, but it was thought that the attention of the Commissioners of the Exhibition of 1831 should be called to the great merit of the two candidates who were left out, and they might see their way to consider them in connection with the scholarships in their gift. The Scholarships Committee of the Royal Commission met yesterday and decided that they could not entertain any case unless brought forward by one of the recommending institutions on the list. If Aston were recommended, Geikie has reason to hope that he would receive much support.
