| Description | The Observatories Committee of the Royal Society resolved at their meeting on 18 January 1910 that is is desirable in the interests of the meteorological and physical investigation in the Southern Hemisphere that the proposal for Dr [George Clarke] Simpson to accompany Captain Scott's expedition as meteorologist and physicist should be carried through.
They also took into consideration the programme of scientific work for 1909-10 in connection with reports of the observatories at Kodaikanal, Alibag and Poona. A good start has been made in the extension of investigating the upper atmosphere and they consider that there is every reason that this work should be allowed to develop freely.
The Committee welcome the continuation of the work of the late Sir John Eliot in the reduction of the observational data relating to Indian winds, also the intended systematic study of the material collected from ships' logs in the Indian Ocean.
The Committee recognises the value of the special investigations proposed to be carried out at Kodaikanal Observatory in addition to the ordinary work.
The Committee looks forward to receiving the publishes results of the valuable and doubtless intricate reduction of the series of sixty years magnetic observations which is available at Colaba Observatory.
The Committee notes the steady progress of the Indian magnetic survey. They consider that the pendulum observations now proceeding will be of great importance. |
