| Description | Harrison regrets the delay in answering Freshfield's note on the subject of boundary lines between the American Colonies. The Royal Society has no records of a survey of the boundary lines of American colonies of Connecticut, Massuchchussetts, Rhode Island and New Hampshre being undertaken by the Royal Society. The King was appealed to several times by the colonies themselves and the delimitation was undertaken by Mason & Dixon and originated with the respective proprietors of Pennsylvania and Maryland (Lord Baltimore for Maryland and Mr Penn for Pennsylvania). The Royal Society contribution was only an opportunity to measure a degree of latitude, on of the boundary lines running north and south for 100 miles or so, but this was not a delimitation of boundaries at all. |
