| Description | In response to their letter of 17 instant, enclosing a copy of a telegram from the Officer Administering the Government of Uganda, with regard to the continuance on special service of Dr H L Duke and Dr G D Carpenter, Bradford has the honour of stating that the investigations into etymology of the Glossina flies in its relation to Sleeping Sickness, cannot be regarded by any means as completed. There remains much work to be done on the bionomics of the fly.
With regard to Dr Duke, the Royal Society, as stated in Bradford's letter of 16 October [NLB/46/687] has recommended that this instigator be allowed to proceed upon an expedition to the region of Lake Albert with a view to making further important investigations. It is improbable that these investigations can be completed by next March. On these grounds the Royal Society would deprecate the withdrawal of officers named from their special service as suggested in the telegram under reference. |
