Description | Rix reports that they received a letter from the Admiralty that morning requesting advice as to the appointment of a superintendent of the Nautical Almanac as the successor to Mr Hind, who will shortly retire. He will not include this on the summonses unless Foster instructs him to do so, and notes the salary as 500 pounds a year.
He also states that the Treasurer has revised the letter to the newspapers and omitted the reference to a lack of legal remedy [against those falsely using the letters F.R.S] on the grounds that it may encourage 'other rogues' to do the same. Rix has sent this letter to the papers.
Rix also informs Foster that the Vienna Academy, influenced by Professor Stricker, now consent to send their octavo publication, and that the London County Council have answered about microscopic organisms to state that they want an estimate of the cost. |
