| Description | Under the direction of the Royal Society and the Royal Astronomical Society, expeditions will be sent to Russia and Sweden to observe the Solar Eclipse of 21 August. President and Council of the Royal Society hope that the government will be willing to assist the observers by obtaining leave from the governments concerned for the erection of the proposed stations of temporary structures and shelters for the valuable instruments. It would be a great advantage if these instruments and equipment of the observers could enter the country duty free, a certificate of re-exportation being furnished if necessary.
It will be further of great assistance to the expedition if the government will ascertain whether the local authorities at the sites will be disposed to render assistance. The sites are Kiev and Feodosia in Russia, and Herndsand in Sweden. Major E E Hills, Professor Fowler and W E Curtis will ariive in Riga by the S S Michail around 29 July and will proceed to Kiev by rail. The instruments will proceed by the same route a week earlier and will return the same way after the eclipse.
Professor H F Newall, Mrs Newall, F H M Stratton, C P Butler and R Rossie will be at Feodosia. The instruments have been forwarded from Hull by Messrs Wilson & Company's S S Aleppo via Novorossik. The assistance of the vice-consul might be valuable in connection with the Customs Office, and in seeing that the instruments are handled with care and forwarded without delay.
Reverend Father Cortie and Reverend Father O'Connor will be at Herndsand. They will arrive in Gothenburg on 30 July by the S S Calypso from Hull and will travel by rail to Herndsand, arriving around 1 August. |
